Spring Discussion Series on Policing
by Chris Gooding
The Political Theologies Seminar at Marquette is going to be hosting a Spring discussion series on the possibility of just policing. Given the current public discussion going on surrounding police brutality and race in the US, we are going to be having a discussion series on the current state of policing, and hearing from voices advocating measures that range from various reforms to the complete abolition of police forces altogether.
Sessions will begin with a 20-30 minute presentation followed by an hour-long discussion. The hour-long discussions will revolve around both themes from the presentation and readings from Radley Balko’s Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America’s Police Forces.
Meetings will take place from 3pm-4:30pm on the first Thursday of every month (Feb. 5th, March 5th, and April 2nd).
The first meeting will take place on Feb. 5th in AMU 231. Chris Gooding will be presenting some of his research on policing in anti-trafficking work. The discussion that follows will revolve around the first four chapters of Balko’s book. Feel free to attend the session even if you cannot commit to reading Balko; his work will simply provide a better context for the discussion that follows.
